KDHP is prominent in Tea Tourism Attracting Thousands of Tourists Every Day
Most of the plantations of Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company are located in Munnar in the Idukki district. The estates are spread over 24,000 hectares. The annual tea production is about 21 million kg. The areas where Eravikulam National Park exists were formerly part of the Kannan Devan Tea Company. In 1978, the Kerala government took over the estate and established a national park to protect the Niligiri Thar. Tata established the museum when visitors started coming in large numbers.

Kanan Devan moves beyond tea products
One of the most notable achievements of the Research and Development Lab at KDHP is the production of high-yielding and high-quality tea clones through selection and hybridization. The strawberry preserving unit run by Srishti, a rehabilitation project for differently-abled dependents of KDHP workers, uses high-quality strawberry varieties developed by the lab. Knowing the fact that Munnar's soil and climate are favorable for strawberry cultivation, hybrid varieties from Pune are also being tested here. The lab and its greenhouses currently have 2,50,000 strawberry plants in various stages of growth. The strawberry varieties developed in the lab are currently planted on over 1.5 hectares. With an aim to spread social awareness and social responsibility, the lab's nursery cultivates endangered and wild plants. KDHP is going to launch many more projects in tea tourism which will attracts tourists to this destination. That can be enjoyed directly from the KDHP tea plantations in the coming years.
